I figured this is the year the world ended so I might as well get off of my butt an cosplay. I’ve wanted to cosplay for years but confidence in my sewing skills and never being able to make up my mind about a character/costume have always held me back.

Well I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few years working on my sewing skills and my ability to alter and draft patterns and I’m in a place where I’m really happy with the clothes I’m making.

This year I have two cosplay’s planned; Clara from Doctor Who and Ryuko from Kill La Kill.

For Clara this is the waitress outfit she wore in Season 9 episode 12 “Hellbent. The Ryuko look is her street wear look from the series. I figured both would be a good places to start my cosplaying journey. The have easy silohuettes and I have patterns I can use to create the looks I want.

I have a planner that I developed specifically for sewing that includes swatches from my fabric stash with yardage and a listing of my pattern inventory. It’s really helpful when I go to the fabric store so that I don’t pick up duplicate patterns or when I look at patterns I can flip through my stash and see if I have anything I might want to make the pattern with that’s in my current fabric stash.

I find that with sewing projects there are certain prep steps that make a project go a lot smoother me and I’ll like the outcome of the garment if I do them from the outset. I’ve been really happen with my last couple of garments since I got my new iron. It steams better and has more surface area so I get a really good press on my seams.

I’ve found some great resources to help me in preparing and planning my cosplays here are the links for anyone who might be interested.

Cosplay 101: Budgeting For cosplay
A great video that talks about the early planning of cosplay. Mangosirene’s whole Cosplay 101 series is really interesting

Cosplanner
Is an app that can help you plan your cosplay by storing reference pictures, keeping lists for the cosplay you can check of as you finish parts of the costume.

Cosplay Planning Project sheets
From seamsgeeky.com for those who like physical planners. I found pages 3 and 4 of the PDF the most useful in my planner.

I'm making an effort to declutter my library and make it more of a library/maker space and I realized I have a lot of fanzines. I need to do a complete inventory of them and have a sale. I have a huge amount of sentinel and K/S zines but I have a some in other fandoms like Smallville, Due South and Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. But the number I have I taking up a lot ofspace and there are only a few that I reread because I enjoyed them so much.

One of the things that I realized in making the move to dreamwidth is that the reason that I hadn't been blogging much was because I became annoyed with the LIvejournal as a platform. I have Tumblr and with the tumblr app its quick an easy to do quick posts and include pictures. Mostly I'm on tumblr to fuel my shameless hockey addiction (Dallas Stars Baby!) and love of art.

I'm going to use this move as a springboard to journal more. I have cosplays planned for this year and other sewing projects in the works that I want to take pictures of and post.

So the new Terminator trailer is out and Marvel just announced Benedict cumberbatch as Dr. Strange. I like BC's acting so I'm excited to what he's going to bring to the marvel universe. And the new terminator trailer is SICK. I love the robot apocalypse.

I'm not going to spoil the episode for anybody but even with the latest twist that was on tonight I am still not pleased.

we've had better build up in past seasons.

I don't know about anybody else but I've been a little disappointed with Dr Who this season. I mean Peter Capaldi is a really great actor and I like Jenna Coleman but they seem to really under used this season and its getting on my nerves.

in fact it feels like Clara's character is completely different from what it was last season and they we're supposed to be going into a finale and it's like we haven't done anything of substance this season and our mystery villain woman at the end of the episode for like 50 seconds doesn't count at all.

I saw Riddick today and loved it. Something about this character has just always resonated with me. when I have a bad day it's usually a toss up between a die hard marathon or a riddick marathon, riddick usually wins.

I am the old woman at the anime club and I'm okay with that. Otakon was amazing, the hours in line were well worth the concerts. I haven't been active in anime fandom in years. Though I still watch anime and read manga there have been so many changes in the industry (especially with manga publishers) that I've shied away from investing my cash in a new manga series the way I use to. I looked around Otakon and most of the people I talked with I was old enough to be their unwed, teenage mother. Some of them had never heard of some of the animes I was into like Rurouni Kenshin or Escaflowne (crazy right). I love being able to get my anime fix on the cheap thanks to hulu and my local library has good manga collections so I don't have to spend my cash like I did back in high school/college.

That's the one thing I've kept my hand in about anime, the music. J-pop is fun and amazing and always makes me feel upbeat. And now Itunes is carrying some j-pop so that's exciting. I found a few new artists at Otakon and am going through my TM Revolution and Yoko kanno discographies and rocking out. I've also decided a to hunt down an save a few of the fics I read and loved from when I was in the fandom. Most of those sites haven't been updated in years but they're still up so I'm going to epub my faves before they disappear.

I spend my days in live action fandoms where in some cases I'm the barely legal kid at the club. It's all good.

Apparently, the year I decided to come back to otakon is the year with their largest turn out ever because of the two j-pop guest performing.I'm currently in a line that is wrapped aroung the neighboring arena waiting to be seated for t.m. revolution.

it is very hot buI'm keeping cool in my spiffy new transformers T-shirt with optimus prime on it.

Last weekend it was shore leave, this weekend it's otakon. I really want to catch the two concerts happening there as well as a panel or two.

the difference between the two cons is night and day. I haven't been to otakon in a few years because so many things were changing on the anime scene, especially what dealers at the con were offering.
I realized as I was waiting in a really long line to register for the con I didn't know anyone. In line I played Uno with some nice girls who were probably fresh out of high school and it was fun but not like hanging out with friends.

shore leave has spoiled me quite a bit. I have a great group of friends I'm social with and there are a lot of familiar faces. Those people may not be my friends but I see them almost every year at shore leave and it's comforting.

it will be interesting to see where anime/manga is right now. I still watch some shows on hulu but i stopped reading manga when a couple of the companies closed their doors right when i was reading a series so now I can't finish unless some other company buys the rights.

There is an array of walking dead fiction out there that's the victim of miscasting i guess is the best word. I mean, are you going to have lacy undies in the zombie apocalypse? Is the cute, precocious, loudly chatty child really going to work in a world where the predatory swarm is drawn to loud noises and bright lights? These things may work in regular fics but when you throw them in the zombie apocalypse, not quite. You could have the lacy undies but honesty are they going to look cute and sexy or be jacked up from having to be hand washed an worn almost everyday if you're short on clothes. And the child may start out adorable and chatty but after living in the harshness of zombie peril, would they stay that way or would they learn the quiet equals a measure of safety?

And lets not forget the hygiene issues that are associated with the undead masses overrunning the earth. I don't know if some of these writers are watching the same show I am but there are various elements in the world building of the show that some people seem to be ignoring. It's not even that there is bad writing afoot, just a few stories with elements that seem really out of place or not there at all in the walking dead universe.

Then of course there are the daryl/ofc stories. But that's a post for another day.

Question: where is the epic Resident Evil/ Walking dead crossover I'm mentally salivating over. To me this is begging to be written. The Umbrella Corporation is evil enough to cross fandoms like awesome badassness.

And we aren't clear on how the zombie apocalypse started in the walking dead'verse. There's potential here, I can't be the only one who's thought of this!
