Today's music or lack there of
Sep. 23rd, 2003 05:03 pmI want to talk about music for a second. I recently joined an anti-avril clique and it got me thinking about my likes and dislikes in music and the motivations behind them.
Now I don’t hate Avril with a passion like a lot of people who have the hate sites but there are two things that piss me off disrespect & poseurs who do it badly. I can't say it loud enough, AVRIL IS NOT PUNK!
Fugazi is punk,
Black Flag is punk.
Operation Ivy is punk.
Avril is pop rock which is fine but don’t sell yourself as something you aren’t and then when people call you on it lie about it when there are tons of articles and interviews you did that tell a different story.
I was done with her when she mispronounced David Bowie’s last name. He’s the man, an artist who has kept to his artistic vision whether it was commercially viable or not. Maybe I’m biased but hey Bowie’s just the shit to me. I love his albums and even his experimental side projects like Tin Machine. I strive to be as artistically uncompromising as he is.
But this also got me thinking about Britney Spears. Who told her that part of being an adult was posing half naked on magazine covers and saying I’m a grown up? Maturity is shown in your intellect and how you conduct yourself , not by what you’re now able to take off cause you’re legal.
Maybe I’m getting old now that I’m outside of the MTV demographic and it’s all lost to me.
I didn’t mean for this to be a popstar bashing fest but I just saw the cover of “Elle Girl” in the bookstore yesterday with Britney in nothing but these tiny little panties and all I could do was roll my eyes and laugh. She has it so wrong on so many levels.
